Juan Felipe Ángel Molina is a highly experienced practitioner in global plant optimization projects. Trained in renowned institutions, including in the United States and Japan, he brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his work. Juan Felipe primarily leads optimization projects across Latin America, where his efforts consistently yield exceptional results. His profound understanding of production systems, paired with a practical, hands-on approach, has established him as a trusted expert in driving efficiency and excellence in manufacturing operations worldwide.

The world is globalizing, and top-tier manufacturing is no longer limited to just a few leading countries—excellent companies can be found all over the world. Latin America, too, is developing at full speed. Structured approaches to improving efficiency, once the domain of Japanese, American, and other advanced industrial nations, are now spreading across manufacturing and service companies throughout Latin America.

For Europe, the greatest competitive threat does not come just from countries that have already surpassed it, but from less developed nations that are becoming increasingly better and more efficient.

Let’s listen to top expert Juan Felipe Ángel Molina from Colombia, who will join us at the conference via a live online connection from Japan. The world is becoming smaller and more complex—a true global village.

A key challenge was reducing the high waste rate in production. By implementing Lean and TPM, we managed to decrease it from 15% to 4%, which increased efficiency and reduced costs. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) improved from 83% to 86.7%, positively impacting productivity and financial results.

How did you gain support from leadership and employees for implementing organizational methodologies, and what obstacles did you have to overcome?

We gained support from leadership and employees through transparent communication and demonstrating the benefits of Lean and TPM. Initial resistance was overcome by continuous training, involving employees in the process, and celebrating small wins to maintain motivation.

What innovative approaches or tools do you use to improve process efficiency, and what results have you achieved with them?

We used tools like Poka Yoke and Center lining to improve efficiency. These innovations resulted in a 50.78% reduction in bottling cycle time and increased equipment availability to 76%, enhancing productivity and customer satisfaction. The implementation of SMED doing a systematic empowerment starting in the first wave with the SHE manager and ending the 4th wave led by the operator, reducing time from 2.5 hours to 7 minutes.

How does your improvement philosophy influence long-term strategy, especially in the context of digitalization and Industry 4.0?

Our continuous improvement philosophy aligns with digitalization and Industry 4.0 by integrating IoT and real-time data analytics to optimize production and decision-making. This allows us to adapt quickly to market changes and maintain long-term competitiveness.

What advice would you give to companies just starting their transformation journey? What are the key steps to take and pitfalls to avoid?

My advice is to start with a thorough assessment of current processes and define clear objectives. Engaging personnel from the beginning and providing adequate training is crucial. Avoid abrupt changes and focus on incremental improvements. Measure and analyze results to adjust strategies as needed.

What business mistakes have you made in the past that provided you with the most valuable lessons, and how have you applied them to your development?

One valuable mistake was not adequately involving employees from the start, leading to resistance to change. We learned that active participation and constant communication are key. Since then, we have improved our communication strategy and involved employees at every stage of the process.

How do you prefer to spend your weekends when you want to disconnect from work and recharge your batteries?

I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or cycling. I also like to practice Hapkido with my son and spend time with family and friends. These activities help me disconnect from work and recharge my energy for the upcoming week.
